PLTW 2023-2024 Engineering Capstone Project
Six FHS seniors, enrolled in the Engineering Design and Development course taught by Mr. Stauffer, worked over the first quarter of the school year to identify projects based on real-world problems. Two teams, with three students each, were formed. They began the school year brainstorming ideas related to problems that routinely frustrated them. Each team chose three of those ideas to research further. After studying the problem and surveying others affected by the issue, teams defined requirements for a device to solve the problem. These requirements, along with their research process, were presented to a panel of three professional engineers for feedback.
The student proposals related to developing an inexpensive computer testbed and a device to promote ladder stability. Both teams will continue their projects for the rest of the school year with the support of local mentors who have experience in engineering and technology applications. The goal is for each team to develop a prototype of the project for the remainder of the school year with a final presentation given in early May.
